Early Autumn Update

A lesson I’ve recently learned: Sometimes it’s good to be
reminded of other people’s struggles.

The other day a customer came into the shop. He had heard of us from a recent
newspaper article (thank you to the Newberg Graphic for the wonderful write up.) In the
article he read that we offered wheat-free cookies. But when he came in he found our
selection to be a little lacking. He explained how difficult it can be to have this dietary
need. Going to some place that’s supposed to have wheat-free options, only to find those
options are merely available upon request but not ready for walk-in purchase. He was
frustrated by this experience but accepting as he understood that that is the way things are
at most places. His plight is understandable and inspiring. Even though we were unable to
help him in that moment, we have since increased the amount of wheat-free cookies
available at any given time. As we are still a small operation, as far as labor is concerned,
we are not able to offer everything that we would like. But we will continue to remember
this frustration that some people have and do our best to be prepared with many offerings.
It is always a good thing to be given a new perspective from time to time, as a humbling
reminder as to why we attempt what we do. I cannot remember the customer’s name (not
that I would post that information here!) but I regret his dissatisfaction and entreat him to
return to see the effect his frustration has had. And also to try some of our new wheat-free
cookies!

On another note: the weather is turning colder, grayer and rainier. With this updated
climate comes an updated menu more suitable for the dreary weather. We will soon begin
offering more holiday-type cookies like gingerbread as well as some of our other cookies
that we didn’t think matched well with the hot summer month (such as cardamom or our
pecan turtledove.) We will announce when our menu will turn over and what cookies will
be staying, which ones will be removed, and the ones you can look forward to trying for
the first time. Also, the first week of October will find us extremely short staffed. We
aren’t sure at the moment how that will affect our hours of operation or the cookie
varieties that we will have available when we are open. We will post updates to our
Facebook page as well as our Twitter account as we learn more.
